A traveling vendor selling oil (mainly for lighting). Until the Middle Ages, oil was made from sesame and perilla seeds, and oil dealers dealing in oil appeared in various places. Among them, the oil dealer in Oyamazaki, Yamashiro, was active almost nationwide, and "Yamazaki" became synonymous with oil sales. In the early modern period, rapeseed oil and cottonseed oil became popular, with Settsu, Kawachi, and Izumi becoming major production areas, and wholesalers such as Kyoto-guchi wholesalers, Edo-guchi wholesalers, oil suppliers, and raw material buyers were established in Osaka. These companies organized into stock associations to control sales routes and the specifications of barrels, and monopolized the market, which continued until the Meiji period. According to Morisada Manko, the customs of oil sellers in Edo, Kyoto, and Osaka were the same: they wore indigo cotton with a tan-dyed chest apron, and carried an oil barrel on their shoulders. → Related article Oyamazaki [town] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
