Shin Aoyagi

Japanese: 新青柳 - しんあおやぎ

The title of a jiuta/koto song. The shamisen is played by Ishikawa Koto and the koto is composed by Yaezaki Kengyo. It is one of the "Ishikawa Mitsumono" along with "Yae Goromo" and "Tooru". It is also called simply "Aoyagi" except when it is to be distinguished from the shamisen kumiuta "Aoyagi". The lyrics make full use of the quirky parts of the Noh song "Yugyoyanagi". The song sings of a scene in which a wandering saint bestows a nembutsu on the spirit of an old willow tree he meets at Shirakawa Barrier, and the spirit appears in his dream and tells a story related to the willow tree, after which the conversation turns to kemari and the love story of Kashiwagi from the Tale of Genji.

地歌･箏曲の曲名。三弦は石川勾当，箏は八重崎検校作曲の京風手事物。《八重衣（やえごろも）》《融（とおる）》とともに〈石川の三ツ物〉の一つ。三味線組歌の《青柳》と区別する場合以外は，単に《青柳》とも。歌詞は謡曲《遊行柳（ゆぎようやなぎ）》のクセの部分をそっくり利用。遊行の聖が，白河関で出会った柳の老木（おいき）の精に念仏を授けたところ，夢枕に立った精が柳にちなむ故事を述べた後，蹴鞠のことや《源氏物語》の柏木の恋の話に話題が広がった場面を歌っている。
