...Women who returned home after the stable period following World War II were not satisfied with their lives, and although the number of women receiving higher education increased, they were not given the opportunity to utilize their abilities. Inspired by sexism in the black movement and student movement, this gave birth to a new women's movement. Friedan's The Feminine Mystique (1963, Japanese title The Creation of a New Woman) was influential in expanding this movement. Women's Liberation criticized the family, the gender role division of labor between men and women, the constructed "femininity," which holds women back, as well as the entire political, economic, social, and cultural systems that stand on top of these, and advocated raising women's consciousness in order to face reality and strengthen solidarity. ...
