… The finest surviving examples of this Italian style garden, completed in the 16th century, are Villa d'Este (Villa d'Este) built by Ippolito d'Este in Tivoli near Rome, and Villa Lante in Bagnaia, north of Rome (both built in the mid-16th century). Both were built on sloping ground, but the former is characterized by its extensive use of water, while the latter is a typical example of the combination of giardini (geometric gardens) and bosco (groves), which are characteristic of 16th-century Italian gardens. It should also be remembered that these gardens, like the interiors of the villas, were decorated with statues of gods from Greek and Roman mythology and various allegorical figures. …
