He went to Yokohama to study Western studies and became a member of the Yokohama Band. He returned to Hirosaki with Methodist Episcopal missionary John Ing, and in 1874 he became head of To-o Gijuku. The following year he established the Hirosaki Public Church and converted to Methodism.
