Toritoma - Toritoma

Japanese: トリトマ - とりとま
Toritoma - Toritoma

A cold-resistant perennial plant of the lily family (APG classification: Asparagaceae). Native to the Cape region of South Africa. Its Japanese name is Shaguma Yuri (Red Bear Lily). It is the most widespread of the Kniphofia genus. The leaves are evergreen and covered with white powder, and many of them grow at the base in a clump. They are 60-90 cm long, 2-3 cm wide, and have sharp tips. A flower stalk that can reach up to 1 meter grows between the leaves, and at the end of the stalk are densely packed cylindrical flowers. The flowers grow downward, are 15-25 cm long, and are orange-red when in bud, turning yellow at the bottom as they bloom. They flower from June to October. They are often used in flower beds and as cut flowers, and there are many varieties that differ greatly in flower color, size, and flower stalk height. They are hardy and easy to cultivate, and do not require special soil quality, but they grow best in sunny places. Propagation is by division in spring or early autumn.
