A former town in Takashima District, western Shiga Prefecture. It is on the northwest shore of Lake Biwa, and the eastern part is the alluvial plain of the Azumi River. Rice is the main crop, but vegetables are also grown. The western part is Aebano, an alluvial plateau that continues from the former Imazu Town, and is a training ground for the Self-Defense Forces. The textile industry, which produces hemp and staphylococcus fiber, is thriving. The Kosei Line runs through the town. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In January 2005, it merged with Makino Town, Imazu Town, Azumigawa Town, Takashima Town, and Kutsuki Village in Takashima District to become Takashima City. 32.84 km2 . Population: 11,405 (2003). 滋賀県西部,高島郡の旧町。琵琶湖の北西岸にあり,東部は安曇(あど)川の沖積平野で,米作を中心として,野菜栽培も行う。西部は旧今津町に続く洪積台地の饗庭野(あえばの)で自衛隊の演習場。麻,スフなどの繊維工業が盛ん。湖西線が通じる。1993年に琵琶湖がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2005年1月高島郡マキノ町,今津町,安曇川町,高島町,朽木村と合併し市制,高島市となる。32.84km2。1万1405人(2003)。
