This refers to the albino form of the Japanese rat snake, a non-venomous snake of the Colubridae family of the Squamata order of the Reptilia class. The population living in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, in particular, is known overseas and has long been protected as a messenger of the gods. It has been designated a national natural monument since 1924 (Taisho 13). [Takahiro Matsui] FolkloreThe white snakes mentioned in early modern essays and folklore are not necessarily pure white, but are often light grey or light brown in colour and with red eyes. Another distinctive feature is a ball at the end of the tail. They come in all different sizes. They are said to be gentle and adorable. Snakes are widely thought to be messengers from the water god, and white ones in particular are rare, so they have been considered to have supernatural powers. There is a widespread tendency to see deformed or mutated plants and animals. There are shrines all over the country that worship white snakes as their deities, and one such as Ugajin is a coiled white snake with a human face. If one happened to come into a house, it was thought to be the guardian deity of the house.
