1881‐1955 French Catholic priest, Jesuit, and paleontologist. He advocated the synthesis of the worldview of modern natural science, particularly the evolutionary worldview and the Christian worldview, and sought to realize this. He studied philosophy and theology in England and became a priest, and after returning to Japan he studied paleontology under M. Boulle. He was conscripted as a nurse during World War I, and after the war he obtained his doctorate at the Sorbonne. After a short stint teaching at the Catholic University of Paris, he served as an advisor to the Chinese Geographical Society from 1923 to 1946, engaged in research into paleontology and stratigraphy in China and northern Asia. During this time he participated in the excavation of the Zhoukoudian Cave, as well as numerous expeditions to Central Asia, India, Burma, and elsewhere.
