Erlau in German. The capital of the Heves region in northern Hungary. It is located in the southern part of the Bück Mountains, a branch of the Carpathian Mountains in northern Hungary. It was a settlement before the Hungarian (Magyar) arrived (896), and a bishopric was established in the early 10th century. During the Ottoman invasion in the 16th century, Hungarian troops under the command of Dobó fought a heroic defense from this fortress, but the city was occupied by the Ottomans for about a century from the end of the 16th century. It has been the seat of an archbishopric since 1804. The surrounding area is a grape-producing region, and the wine "Eger Bull's Blood" is famous. There are many ruins from the Ottoman occupation, such as the fortress where the Dobó Museum is located and a 16th century minaret. Population: 62,474 (1991 estimate). Eger |
