1562‐1607 A Jesuit priest from the Portuguese Azores. His Chinese name was E Ben Dun. In 1602, he was dispatched from Goa, India, to China to find out whether Katai and China were the same, and whether there was a land route connecting India and Beijing. He passed through Lahore and Kabul, and joined a tribute delegation from Yarkand. After many hardships, he arrived at Suzhou in Gansu at the end of 1605 (the 33rd year of the Wanli era), but his illness worsened and he died there. His diary and other records were lost at the time, but Matteo Ricci reconstructed his travelogue based on the notes of his attendant, and it has become a valuable resource for learning about the situation in Central Asia at that time.
