A passerine bird of the Emberizidae family. It is about 14 cm long, the size of a sparrow, and has a slender body. The sexes are different, but both appear yellowish. The male has a chestnut-colored back, a black face and throat, and a yellow underside. There is a chestnut-colored band on the upper chest and a large white mark on the shoulders. The female has an inconspicuous yellowish-brown back and a yellow underside. It is widely distributed in northern Eurasia from Eastern Europe to the Kamchatka Peninsula, and migrates to southern China and southern Asia in winter. In Japan, it breeds in Hokkaido, and can be seen in various parts of Honshu during the migration season.
