A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family. It is widely distributed in temperate wetlands in the Northern Hemisphere, and can be found in wetlands and stream edges throughout Japan. The rhizome is thick and white. The stem is erect and square-columnar, reaching a height of about 1m, and bears dense, opposite leaves. The leaves are broad lanceolate, 6-13cm long, pointed at both ends, and have sharp sawtooth edges. From summer to autumn, it bears numerous white, lip-shaped flowers about 5mm long in the leaf axils. The thickened part at the tip of the rhizome is edible. The Japanese name comes from the white rhizome.
