Shirane [city] - Shirone

Japanese: 白根[市] - しろね
Shirane [city] - Shirone
An old city in the north-central part of Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1959. Located almost in the center of the Echigo Plain, between the Shinano River and its branch, the Nakanokuchi River, it had long suffered from floods, but in 1927, the Okawazu Diversion Channel of the Shinano River was completed and land reorganization was carried out, making it a prolific producer of Echigo rice. The city center developed as a market town and river port town, and it is a distribution center for vegetables and pears, with Buddhist altars and sickles being its specialties. National Route 8 runs through the town. It is famous for its 300-year-old kite battle in June. In March 2005, Niitsu City, Toyosaka City, Nakakanbara County's Kosudo Town, Yokogoshi Town, Kameda Town, Nishikanbara County's Iwamuro Village, Nishikawa Town, Aikata Village, Katahigashi Village, Tsukigata Village, and Nakanokuchi Village were incorporated into Niigata City. 77.06 km2 . 40,733 people (2003).
