Cochineal insects

A species of insect in the Hemiptera family, Diaspididae. Females are oval, about 2 mm long, wingless, blood red, and covered with a white waxy substance. Males are slender and winged. Also called cochineal. Parasitic on cacti, distributed throughout Central and South America.
