...During this time, in order to treat her neurosis and to create an outlet for her own works, she bought a hand-operated printing press in 1917 and founded a small publishing house, Hogarth Press, with her husband, which published works by Mansfield and TS Eliot. She then completed Orlando (1928), which expressed her inner world in the form of an androgynous protagonist, a 16-year-old boy in Elizabethan times and a 36-year-old woman in the 20th century, the highly symbolic Waves (1931), which consists of a series of interior monologues by six men and women, The Years (1937), which depicts a middle-class family from the 18th century to the present in a relatively traditional form, and Interlude (1941). However, she committed suicide by drowning in March 1941 during World War II. As a theoretical standard-bearer of literature after World War I, she advocated the direct depiction of the inner world of human beings, their souls, and published literary critiques in two volumes of The Ordinary Reader (1925, 32), The Colonel's Deathbed (1950), and The Flowering Rocks and the Rainbow (1958). She also wrote pioneering works on gender issues, such as A Room of My Own (1929) and Three Guineas (1938).
