A fish of the family Goby in the order Perciformes (illustration). It is an amphibious fish. It is found off the coasts of Southeast Asia, China, and the Korean Peninsula, but in Japan it is only found in the Ariake Sea off Kyushu and the adjacent Yatsushiro Sea. Its body is greenish gray with scattered light-colored spots. It has a long first dorsal fin and a fleshy base for its pectoral fins, which are adapted for crawling on tidal flats. Both eyes protrude from the top of the head and can be moved freely. When it is out of the water, it holds water in its mouth and breathes through its gills, the mucous membranes in its mouth, the skin, and the fin membranes.
