Uhara virgin - Unai Otome

Japanese: 菟原処女 - うないおとめ

The hero of a legendary wife-fight.
A beautiful girl who is said to have lived in Uhara District, Settsu (at the southern foot of Mt. Rokko in Hyogo Prefecture). Troubled by the marriage proposals of two men, Unai and Chinu, she threw herself into the Ikuta River, with the two men following her. Her story was sung about by Takahashi Mushimaro and Otomo no Yakamochi in the Manyoshu, and was the subject of the Yamato Monogatari, the Noh play Motomezuka, and Mori Ogai's Ikuta River.

摂津菟原(うはら)郡(兵庫県の六甲山南麓)にすんでいたという美少女。菟原壮士(うないおとこ)と血沼(ちぬ)壮士に求婚されてなやみ,生田川に身をなげ,ふたりの男も後を追う。「万葉集」で高橋虫麻呂や大伴家持らにうたわれ,「大和物語」,謡曲「求塚」や森鴎外「生田川」の題材になった。
