A city in the province of Bari in Puglia, southeastern Italy. It is located about 50 km west-northwest of Bari, on the slopes of the Murge Mountains. It first appears in history during the Norman invasion in the 11th century, but it is also said that the Greek geographer Strabo in the 1st century BC called it a city called Netium. The city contains Roman ruins, a reconstructed 10th century cathedral, and the Gothic-style San Domenico Monastery. Grape, olive, and almond cultivation is thriving, and winemaking and textile manufacturing are also carried out. Population 82,556 (1991 estimate). イタリア南東部,プーリア州バリ県の都市。バリの西北西約 50km,ムルジェ山地の斜面に位置する。歴史上に最初に現れるのは 11世紀ノルマン人の侵入のときであるが,前1世紀のギリシアの地理学者ストラボンがネチウムと呼んだ都市ともいわれる。市内にはローマ時代の遺跡や再建された 10世紀の聖堂のほか,ゴシック様式の聖ドメニコ修道院がある。ブドウ,オリーブ,アーモンドの栽培が盛ん。ワイン醸造,繊維工業なども行われる。人口8万 2556 (1991推計) 。
