A city in the province of Bari in Puglia, southeastern Italy. It is located about 50 km west-northwest of Bari, on the slopes of the Murge Mountains. It first appears in history during the Norman invasion in the 11th century, but it is also said that the Greek geographer Strabo in the 1st century BC called it a city called Netium. The city contains Roman ruins, a reconstructed 10th century cathedral, and the Gothic-style San Domenico Monastery. Grape, olive, and almond cultivation is thriving, and winemaking and textile manufacturing are also carried out. Population 82,556 (1991 estimate).
