Joban Expressway - Joban Expressway

This expressway connects the Tokyo metropolitan area with the southern Pacific coast of the Tohoku region. It is managed by East Nippon Expressway Company. It starts in Nerima Ward, Tokyo, but as it is part of the Tokyo Outer Ring Expressway (between Nerima Ward and Misato City, Saitama) up to Misato City, Saitama, the de facto starting point is Misato City. From here, it heads north through Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture, crosses the Tone River, passes through Tsuchiura City, Mito City, and Hitachi City in Ibaraki Prefecture, and continues north along the Pacific coast to its terminus in Sendai City. It connects to the Kita-Kanto Expressway in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and connects to the Tohoku Cross-Iwaki Expressway (Ban'etsu Expressway) in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture. The total length is 352 km. The section between Misato City and Mito City is six lanes, and the rest are four lanes (some parts are temporarily two lanes). This road not only eases congestion on the parallel National Route 6, but also plays a major role in advancing development plans centered on Tsukuba Science City, Mito City, and Hitachi City, as well as industrial development in the new industrial city of Iwaki.

As of December 2011, 230 kilometers of expressway have been opened between Kawaguchi City and Tomioka Town in Fukushima Prefecture, and approximately 49 kilometers between Yamamoto Town and Sendai City (not including the 18 kilometers between Nerima Ward and Kawaguchi City). Construction is currently underway between Tomioka Town in Fukushima Prefecture and Shinchi Town, and between Yamamoto Town in Miyagi Prefecture and Watari Town.

首都圏と東北地方の太平洋沿岸南部を結ぶ高速道路。管理は東日本高速道路。東京都練馬(ねりま)区を起点とするが、埼玉県三郷(みさと)市までは東京外環自動車道（練馬区―埼玉県三郷市間）の一部となるため、事実上の起点は三郷市になる。ここから北上して千葉県柏(かしわ)市を通り、利根(とね)川を渡って、茨城県土浦市、水戸市、日立市を経て、太平洋岸沿いにさらに北上し、終点の仙台市に至る。茨城県笠間(かさま)市で北関東自動車道に接続、福島県いわき市で東北横断自動車道いわき新潟線（磐越自動車道）に接続する。総延長は352キロメートル。三郷市―水戸市間は6車線、他は4車線（一部は暫定的に2車線）である。この道路は、並行する国道6号の混雑緩和とともに、筑波(つくば)研究学園都市、水戸市、日立市を中心とした開発計画、新産業都市いわき市の工業開発などの進展に大きな役割を担っている。

　2011年（平成23）12月時点で、川口市―福島県富岡町間230キロメートルおよび山元(やまもと)町―仙台市間約49キロメートルが開通しており（練馬区―川口市間18キロメートルは含まない）、福島県富岡町―新地(しんち)町間、宮城県山元町―亘理(わたり)町間が建設中である。
