Wallis, S.

The inhabitants are Polynesians, who practice subsistence agriculture, growing taro, yams, bananas, etc., and are all Catholics today. The first European to arrive on the island was the Englishman Samuel Wallis in 1767, after whom the island was named. It became a French protectorate in 1887, a French colony in 1913, and a French overseas territory in 1959.

…The island's capital, Papeete, is also the administrative, economic and transportation center of French Polynesia. The first person to discover Tahiti was Captain Wallis of the British Navy, commanding the Dolphin, in 1767. The following year, French Captain Bougainville also visited the island and believed he was the first to discover it. Captain Cook, who visited the island four times from 1769, wrote an excellent record of the islanders. …
