A regional capital city in northeastern Libya, North Africa. It is located at the northern foot of the Al-Akhdar Mountains in Cyrenaica. It is also called El Beida. It has a population of 130,900 (2002 estimate). Founded in 1842 by the Sanusi sect, it became the religious center of Cyrenaica, and after independence it was one of the three capitals of Libya. It is a distribution center for agricultural and livestock products, including grapes, grains, and vegetables. It has a European-style urban area and is also known as a resort town.
