Born: 6 February 1665, London [Died] August 12, 1714, London. Queen of England (reigned 1702-14). She was the youngest daughter of James II, and her mother was Anne of Hyde. She received a Protestant education along with her elder sister Mary, and married Prince George of Denmark in 1683, but all of her children died young. During the Glorious Revolution in 1688, she criticized her father and sided with her elder sister and her husband William III, and succeeded her sister to the throne in 1702. In 1707, the United Kingdom of Great Britain was established by merging with Scotland, and with the efforts of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, the country won the War of Spanish Succession and concluded the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. During her reign, such literary figures as A. Pope, D. Defoe, J. Swift, J. Addison, and R. Steele emerged, and the period is called the "Augustan period" in the history of English literature. With her, the House of Stuart came to an end, and after her death, the House of Hanover was established.
