...The orchestra is managed independently by its members, and the conductor is selected by the members themselves. Mahler, Weingartner, and Furtwängler have all served as permanent conductors, and Claudio Abbado (1933-) has held the position since 1971. The orchestra is characterized by a calm elegance and a well-balanced sound quality, but it often gives an old-fashioned impression.
