Kian

Japanese:
Kian
Year of death: 10 August 1653
Year of birth: December 29, 8th year of Eiroku (January 20, 1566)
A monk who came to the Ryukyu Kingdom from Sakai, Izumi Province (Osaka Prefecture) in 1600 and served King Shō Nei. His name was Bangen. He is known for writing the Kian Diary. It is said that he served Shō Nei with the art of tea ceremony, but his career before that is unclear. When the Shimazu army invaded the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1609, he assisted Shō Nei in negotiating peace negotiations at his request, and from that year to the following year, he accompanied Shō Nei when he had audiences with the Shimazu and Tokugawa clans. In 1619, he served as the sukiya magistrate, and the following year he was awarded a fief of 50 koku. It is said that he made a great contribution to the acceptance of tea ceremony in the Ryukyu Kingdom. The Kian Diary is a valuable document from the Ryukyu side regarding the Satsuma invasion. <References> Ikemiya Masaharu, "Kian Diary" (Commentary on Volume 1 of the Naha City History Materials)
