An Indian state located in the central part of the Indian peninsula, facing the Bay of Bengal. Its area is 277,000 km2, and its population is 66.51 million (1991). Its capital is Hyderabad. In 1953, Andhra State was separated from the former Madras State during the British colonial period, and in 1956, the eastern part of the former Hyderabad State was added to it, and in 1960, it was reorganized and established as it is today, as a linguistic state with Telugu, a Dravidian language, as its official language. The topography is arranged from east to west in the order of a long and narrow coastal plain, the mountain ranges of the Eastern Ghats, and the shield-like land of the Deccan Plateau.

インドの州。インド半島中部にあり，ベンガル湾に面する。面積27万7000km2，人口6651万(1991)。州都はハイデラバード。1953年に英領時代の旧マドラス州から分離したアーンドラ州に，56年に旧ハイデラバード州の東部を加え，60年にドラビダ語系に属するテルグ語を地方公用語とする言語州として，現在のように再編･成立した。地形は，狭長な海岸平野，東ガーツ山脈の山塊群，デカン高原の楯状地の順に東から西に配列。
