An Indian state located in the central part of the Indian peninsula, facing the Bay of Bengal. Its area is 277,000 km2, and its population is 66.51 million (1991). Its capital is Hyderabad. In 1953, Andhra State was separated from the former Madras State during the British colonial period, and in 1956, the eastern part of the former Hyderabad State was added to it, and in 1960, it was reorganized and established as it is today, as a linguistic state with Telugu, a Dravidian language, as its official language. The topography is arranged from east to west in the order of a long and narrow coastal plain, the mountain ranges of the Eastern Ghats, and the shield-like land of the Deccan Plateau.
