A town in Higashimurayama County, central Yamagata Prefecture. Its center is Yamabe in the southwest of the Yamagata Basin. It developed as a castle town, and the Aterazawa Line runs through it. In the past, it produced a lot of mosquito nets, but now the textile industry is thriving, especially carpets, which are also exported overseas. Area: 61.45 km2 . Population: 15,139 (2010).
