An annual vine of the Cucurbitaceae family native to tropical Asia. It is considered a variety of the Oriental melon (Magura melon), and its stems and leaves are very similar to those of the Oriental melon. The fruit is 10-20cm long and turns greenish-white when ripe. It does not have the sweetness or fragrance of the Oriental melon, and cannot be eaten raw as a fruit. It is usually picked while still immature and green, and used for pickling in rice bran or Nara, so it is also known as Tsukeuri or Asauri. There are various varieties depending on the region.
