1474?-1566 Spanish priest and historian. He worked tirelessly to protect the freedom and right to live of the Indians. In 1502, he traveled to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola as a missionary. While working to convert the Indians, he also participated in the conquest as a military priest, and as a reward he received an encomienda (an allotment of Indians) in Cibao, Hispaniola. He later moved to Cuba, where he also received an encomienda. According to his own words, during this period he devoted himself to the pursuit of worldly interests rather than missionary work. In June 1514, while preparing a mass for Governor Diego Velázquez, he noticed the injustice being inflicted on the Indians, and freed the Indians in his encomienda.
