Naresuan (English spelling)
?‐1605
The second king of the Sukhothai dynasty of the Ayutthaya dynasty in Thailand. Reigned 1590-1605. In 1569, Burma (now Myanmar) occupied Ayutthaya, and Naresuen lived there as a boy for six years as a hostage. He was said to be a natural warrior, and fought in various places under the orders of the Burmese king. In 1584, Ayutthaya took advantage of the internal conflict in Burma to declare its independence, and achieved its independence by repelling several Burmese armies that invaded Ayutthaya in an attempt to regain control of the city. In 1590, Naresuen succeeded his father, King Maha Thammaratcha, as king, and not only continued to fend off repeated Burmese invasions, but also launched two expeditions to Burma (1594, 1599).
