A morals disturbance incident occurred in the Ooku in 1714. It was discovered that Ejima (Ejima) (1681-1741), a maid who served Shogun Tokugawa Ietsugu's mother Gekkoin, and others were having fun at the Yamamura Theatre in Kobiki-cho. Ejima was placed in the care of Naito Kiyokazu, the lord of Takato Domain in Shinshu, and Yamamura Chotayu and Kabuki actor Ikushima Shingoro (1671-1742) were also exiled. The shogunate used this incident to crack down on public morals in the Ooku, imposing particularly severe punishments on the perpetrators, with 1,500 people implicated, and the Yamamura Theatre was abolished. This incident became the subject of Kabuki and Kyogen plays from the Meiji period onwards, and many works known as "Ejima and Ikushima-mono" were created, including "The Tale of Hourai Sogashima" (Kawatake Mokuami). → Related article Kaigetsudo Ando Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
