Politische Orthodoxie (English)

…Byzantine scholars have often pointed out that this does not fit the reality of the Byzantine Empire. Hans-Georg Beck is one of them, and instead he presents the concept of “political (or politicized) orthodoxie”. According to him, this arose from the fact that Emperor Constantine, who tried to make Christianity the spiritual foundation of the Roman Empire, was placed in the position of arbiter of “correct doctrine (orthodoxie)” when he faced a dispute within the church over doctrine, and the emperor was forced to implement the “correct doctrine” that he had determined by force. As this system took root, the Byzantine Empire, which had a large number of Christians who did not belong to the political orthodoxie, ended up extremely narrowing the room for freedom of judgment in the political dimension, and in order to secure it, the emperor had to seek a difficult path to break away from it as much as possible without fundamentally denying the “political orthodoxie”. …
