Afghan Music - Afghan Music
Afghanistan's music. Afghanistan, which is connected to the Silk Road from east to west and to India from north to south, is a crossroads of ancient civilizations, and has been strongly influenced by the cultural spheres of India, Iran, and Central Asia. Furthermore, Afghanistan has a diverse range of music due to the main ethnic groups that make up the country, such as the Pashtuns, Mongolian Hazaras, Tajiks, and Uzbeks. Along with Islamic Quranic recitation, folk music and dance are also popular. Music is played on a two-stringed plucked instrument called the dombra, as well as stringed instruments such as the rabab, tanbur, dilruba, salinda, kamancheh, hijak, and tar, percussion instruments such as the daira, zarbagari, and tabla baya, and flutes such as the surnay, ney, and tora. Music is also performed by singing or playing ensembles of two or more instruments.
