A census is a complete survey conducted to create static population statistics by observing the population at a point in time. In Japan, it is called the population census. The first census was conducted in 1920, and since then, a large-scale survey (22 items) has been conducted every 10 years, and a simplified survey (17 items) has been conducted in the middle years. The survey items include the name, sex, date of birth, relationship to the head of the household, nationality, previous place of residence, educational background, name of the business, employment status, etc. of household members, as well as the number of household members, type of household income, type of residence, number and size of living rooms, etc. Other population surveys include vital statistics that capture population changes such as births, deaths, marriages, and divorces, and are conducted monthly for each city, town, and village.

人口を一時点で観察した人口静態統計を作成するための全数調査をいい，日本では国勢調査がこれに当たる。国勢調査は 1920年に第1回調査が行なわれ，それ以降，10年ごとに大規模調査 (22項目) が，その中間年に簡易調査 (17項目) が実施されている。調査事項は世帯員に関する氏名，性別，出生年月日，世帯主との続柄，国籍，前住地，学歴，所属事業所名，従業上の地位などの事項，および世帯に関する世帯員数，家計収入の種類，住居の種類，居住室の数や広さなどとなっている。このほかの人口調査として出生，死亡，婚姻，離婚などの人口の変動をとらえる人口動態統計があり，市町村を調査単位として毎月実施されている。
