A deciduous tall tree of the Rosaceae family that grows in mountainous areas, it is named after the strikingly white undersides of its leaves (illustration). The bark is black-brown. The leaves are alternate, broadly elliptical to oval, with sparse sawtooth edges, green and softly hairy on the upper side, and densely covered with white fluff on the underside. Flowers bloom in clusters on short branches in May and June. There are five white petals with rounded tips that curl back when they open. The fruit is elliptical, about 1 cm long, and ripens red in autumn. It is found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. It has no particular use, but the fruit is edible.
