Along with biotite, this is the most widely distributed mica. It occurs in igneous rocks, but is more prevalent in metamorphic rocks, and in pegmatites as large, thick crystals. It is the most transparent of all micas. It does not contain iron, so it has good electrical insulation and is widely used as a heat and insulation material. Monoclinic system. Complete cleavage. Hardness 2.5-3, specific gravity 2.77-2.88. Colorless to pale red, green, or brown. Its chemical composition is complex, with K in KAl ₂ (Si ₃ Al)O ₁ (/0) (OH, F) ₂ being replaced by various alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, and Al by Mg, Fe, Mn, Cr, etc. Compared to muscovite, sericite contains less K and more water, and is white to yellow in color, has a silky luster, and is scaly. The ores containing Li include light pink scaly mica, light brown Zinnwaldite, and light greenish blue ferrolithic mica, which are found in pegmatites, and yellow-green chromium mica, which contains Cr, occurs in association with chromite. These, along with muscovite, belong to the muscovite group.

黒雲母と並んで最も広く分布している雲母。火成岩にも産するが変成岩中に多く，ペグマタイトには大きな厚い結晶として産する。雲母中最も透明度が高い。鉄を含まないため，良好な電気絶縁性をもち，断熱材，絶縁材として広く利用される。単斜晶系。へき開は完全。硬度2.5〜３，比重2.77〜2.88。無色〜淡赤・緑・褐色。化学組成は複雑でKAl₂（Si₃Al）O₁(/0)（OH，F）₂のKを各種のアルカリ金属，アルカリ土類金属，AlをMg，Fe，Mn，Crなどが置換している。白雲母に比べKが少なく水を多く含んでいるものを絹雲母といい，白〜黄色で絹糸光沢をもち，鱗片状をなす。Liを含みその鉱石となる淡紅色のリシア（うろこ）雲母，淡褐色をしたチンワルド雲母，淡緑青色の鉄リシア雲母などがペグマタイト中にみられ，Crを含んだ黄緑色のクロム雲母がクロム鉄鉱に伴って産出する。これらは白雲母とともに白雲母族に属する。
