1891‐1971 A Soviet linguist and literary historian. After graduating from St. Petersburg University, he studied in Germany. In 1919, he became professor of Germanic languages at Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) University, where he also served as head of English. His masterpiece from this period is Byron and Pushkin (1924), known as a classic in comparative literary studies. Around this time, he became close to the Formalists, and wrote many famous works on modern poetry and literary theory.
