This work was published in 1895 as a joint work by S. Freud and J. Breuer. It includes Breuer's case of Anna O., Freud's four cases (Amy von N., Elisabeth von R., Katharina, and Lucy R.) and a paper on "The Psychotherapy of Hysteria," and both authors' papers on "The Psychic Mechanism of Hysterical Phenomena." Breuer used hypnosis to treat hysteria, and Freud was initially influenced by him. However, Freud eventually realized that hypnosis had certain limitations, and discovered free association as a way to make the unconscious conscious, which gave birth to psychoanalysis.
