The method of stylistic history, which was established in the 1920s, showed that most of the ancient oral traditions on which the Gospels are based do not originally convey the historical facts of Jesus, but are inseparably linked to the belief in the resurrection of the early religious communities that were established after his death. The founders of this method, Martin Debelius (1883-1947) and Bultmann, published works titled "Jesus" in 1926 and 1939, respectively, but to varying degrees, abandoned the biographical reconstruction of Jesus' life as in the traditional biographies of Jesus, claiming that it was methodologically impossible, and instead focused on describing Jesus' words (thoughts). The method of redaction history, which was established in the 1950s and is currently the mainstream in Gospel research, also expands on Urede's research and shows that the authors of the Gospels were not historians in the modern sense, but were guided by their own unique theological claims.
