A language belonging to the Indo-European branch of the Indian language family, spoken mainly in the state of Maharashtra in mid-western India. It has about 50 million speakers. It is the official language of Maharashtra, and the standard language is based on the Poona dialect. The Konkani dialect spoken around Goa has quite different characteristics. It has a literature dating back to the 13th century, and is written in a type of Devanagari script.
