A gastropod of the Muricidae family (illustration). The shell can reach 5 cm in height and 3 cm in width, but is generally smaller. It is thick and sturdy, mostly brown, sometimes with white bands. The coil is cone-shaped and six stories tall. There are thin ribs and thick longitudinal ribs all over. There is a corner on the shoulder, but sometimes a thorn grows on top of it. The shell opening is oval, and the water tube at the bottom closes and becomes tubular when the shell becomes an adult. It lives on rocky bottoms from the intertidal zone to depths of about 20 m. It is carnivorous, and feeds on sessile bivalve mollusks such as oysters by drilling small needle-like holes into them, making it a pest in oyster farming.

アクキガイ科の巻貝（イラスト）。殻の高さ5cm，太さ3cmに達するが，一般にはそれより小型である。厚質堅固で多くは褐色，ときに白色帯がある。巻きは円錐形に高くなり6階。全面に細い肋と太い縦肋がある。肩に角があるが，その上にとげを生ずることもある。殻口は卵形で，下方にある水管は成貝になると閉じて管状になる。潮間帯から水深20mくらいの岩れき底にすむ。肉食性でカキなど付着性の二枚貝に小さい針でついたような穴を開けて食べるので，カキの養殖には害敵である。
