A Tendai Buddhist temple in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, also known as Shinnyodo. According to the Shinnyodo Engi Emaki scroll, a document of the temple's history, when Ennin returned from his trip to China, he carved a statue of Amida Buddha that appeared on a boat and enshrined it in the Jodo Hall of Enryaku-ji Temple. In 992, Kaisan received a message in a dream and moved it to a temple built in the villa of Higashisanjo-in, located east of Kaguraoka. In 993, it became a temple at the request of Emperor Ichijo, and the temple's buildings were improved as a large temple. After it was burned down during the Onin War, it was forced to move from place to place, but in 1484, it was rebuilt at its current location thanks to a donation from Ashikaga Yoshimasa. It was later moved again, but returned to its current location in 1693, when it reverted to the Tendai sect. The three volumes of the Shinnyodo Engi Emaki, a colored paper scroll created in 1524, have words written by Emperor Go-Kashiwabara and Prince Sonchin and illustrations by Sobe no Kami Suke Hisakuni. The principal image, Amida Nyorai, is an Important Cultural Property. The temple also houses six volumes of the Lotus Sutra, a supplication scripture by the Buddhist sculptor Unkei, which has a colophon dated 1183 and is a National Treasure. Another temple treasure, the Jien Sojo Message, is an Important Cultural Property. A grand Nembutsu memorial service called "Ojuya" is held from November 5th to 15th.
