...Between the base and the girders, there are some that use kumiko such as manji-kuzushi (Horyu-ji Kondo) or yokorenji (Yokorenji East Pagoda), as well as makuita (curtain boards) and carved boards. In the Zen style, the main pillars are inverted lotus pillars with stylized lotus leaves, the bowls are nigiri-basu (holding lotus leaves), and the openings have warabite (bracken handles) with twisted ends of the beams. Balustrades were already seen in China in the Han Dynasty in stone and Ming ware architecture, and those in the Dunhuang murals have gisho-ju (ceremonial ornaments) on the main pillars and jeweled ornaments on the beams between them....
