In Japan, the term was "asset survey," but in recent years the term "means survey" has become more commonly used, as the survey also places emphasis on income and other factors. A typical example of this in Japan is the public assistance system. In order to determine an applicant's eligibility for benefits based on the "principle of complementarity," the presence or absence and level of income, assets, ability, etc., as well as the possibility of using these, are investigated. This means survey is not limited to public assistance, but is widely used as a selection method in selective public assistance administration in any country.
