… Returning to the Roman era, Roman society had a strong tendency towards pragmatism, and road maps that did not include latitude and longitude measurements were popular. It is said that the map of the entire Roman Empire created by General Agrippa in 20 BC also placed emphasis on the road network. A map that is known to be related to this lineage is the Tabula Peutingeriana, which is estimated to have been created around 500. This road map, named after its former owner, covers the area from Iberia to India on a long horizontal sheet of paper measuring 30 cm x 700 cm. In the medieval Christian world, there was little interest in the whole globe, in contrast to the maps of the Islamic world of the same period, which were drawn based on latitude and longitude. …
