Spinal progressive muscular atrophy

...It is known that there are areas with a high incidence of the disease on the island of Guam and on the Kii Peninsula in Japan, but it has been suggested that the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in these areas may be a separate disease from the usual form seen in other areas.

This is a type of motor neuron disease that affects only the lower motor neurons, and includes a variety of different types, many of which are hereditary. All of them cause muscle atrophy and weakness in the skeletal muscles that perform voluntary movement, but they are subdivided into several diseases based on differences in the age at which they develop, the genetic pattern, and the distribution of affected muscles.
