They are also called statistical charts. The purpose of collecting statistics is to grasp the characteristics of an entire population, and by effectively classifying and organizing the data and presenting them in statistical tables or graphs, the overall picture can be better understood. There are various types of statistical graphs, as shown below, and it is important to use them appropriately depending on the purpose of the survey and the classification labels (qualitative classification, quantitative classification).

It is used for both qualitative and quantitative classification, and compares the absolute amount of each label. Pictorial graphs (Figure 1) are used to compare the content by the area of the picture that depicts it or the number of identical pictures (isotypes) lined up. They are familiar to the general public and are often used in charts and diagrams for display purposes, but they are time-consuming to draw and can lack precision.

統計図表ともいう。統計をとる目的は，集団全体についての特性をつかむことであり，資料をうまく分類整理して，統計表や統計グラフで表すと，全体のようすがよくわかる。統計グラフには，次に示すようにいろいろな種類があり，調査の目的や分類標識(質的分類，量的分類)により，適当に使い分けることがたいせつである。

　質的分類にも，量的分類にも用いられ，各標識についての絶対量の大きさを比較する。絵グラフ(図1)は，その内容を写した絵の面積や同じ絵(アイソタイプ)を並べた個数によって比較するもので，一般の人にも親しみやすく展示用の図表などに多く用いられるが，書くのに手数がかかり，精密さに欠けることもある。
