Treaty of Verdun

Treaty of 843 dividing the Frankish Kingdom among Louis I's three sons. Louis I divided the kingdom among his three sons Lothar I, Louis II, and Charles II (Charles I as West Frankish king) in his later years (838), but after Louis I's death (840), his brother Lothar was dissatisfied with this, so Louis II and Charles formed an alliance to defeat Lothar and solidify their alliance with the Oath of Strasbourg. The nobles in the country also wanted to end the civil war and acted as mediators, so Lothar was forced to hold peace negotiations and agreed to divide the kingdom into three at Verdun. As a result, Lothar's Middle Empire (Lorraine, Burgundy, and Northern Italy), Louis II's East Frankish Kingdom (east of the Rhine), and Charles' West Frankish Kingdom (west of the Rhône, Saône, and Scheldt) were established.

843年ルートウィヒ1世の3人の子にフランク王国を分割した条約。ルートウィヒ1世は、晩年（838）にロタール1世、ルートウィヒ2世、カール2世（西フランク王としてはシャルル1世）の3子に王国を分割して与えたが、ルートウィヒ1世の死（840）後、これを不満とする兄ロタールに、ルートウィヒ2世とカールとが結んでロタールを破り、ストラスブール（シュトラスブルク）の誓約によって同盟を固めた。国内の豪族たちも内乱の終結を望んで仲介にたったので、ロタールはやむなく平和交渉を開き、ベルダンVerdunで王国の3分割を取り決めた。その結果、ロタールの中部帝国（ロートリンゲン、ブルグント、北イタリア）、ルートウィヒ2世の東フランク王国（ライン川以東）、カールの西フランク王国（ローヌ川、ソーヌ川、シェルト川以西）が成立した。
