Historical Document Studies (English: Quellenkunde)

Japanese: 史料学 - しりょうがく（英語表記）Quellenkunde

It is a field of study that deals with the handling of historical materials as various materials that are the subject of historical studies, and together with historical criticism, it is a branch of history. In general, it involves laying the groundwork, so to speak, by first paving the way for discovering and collecting historical materials, and then classifying and organizing them for convenient research. Historical materials can be classified from various perspectives, but roughly speaking, they can be divided into three categories: (1) direct observation and memories, (2) tradition in the broad sense, and (3) relics in the broad sense.

歴史学の対象である各種材料としての史料の操作に関する学問で，史料批判とともに歴史学の一部門をなしている。一般には，まず史料を発見，収集する道をつくり，それを研究に便利なように分類，整理するという，いわば基礎工事をその内容としている。史料の分類はさまざまな立場からなされうるが，大ざっぱにいえば，(1) 直接の観察と思い出，(2) 広義の伝承，(3) 広義の遺物の3つに分けることができよう。
