According to Georges Sadoul's History of World Cinema, Czechoslovakian films before World War II were characterized by "realism that portrayed the beauty of nature, the sense of human life, and bold sensual desires," but after the Nazi occupation, they changed into films of "fantasy and resistance" after the war. Prague, the capital of Czechoslovakia (now the capital of the Czech Republic), had been the center of Eastern European cinema ever since Jan Krizenecky (1868-1921) shot the first feature film (comedy) with a camera and projector called the Cinématographe Lumiere that he purchased in Paris.

ジョルジュ･サドゥールの《世界映画史》によれば，〈自然の美しさと人間の生活感や大胆な官能的欲望を写し出すリアリズム〉が特色だった第2次大戦前のチェコスロバキア映画は，ナチス占領をへて，戦後は〈幻想と抵抗〉の映画に変わっていく。チェコスロバキアの首都プラハ(現チェコの首都)は，ヤン･クリゼネツキーJan Krizenecky(1868‐1921)がパリで購入した撮影機兼映写機〈シネマトグラフ･リュミエール〉で最初の劇映画(喜劇)を撮って以来，東欧の映画の中心地であった。
